Almost every thumbnail is designed at full width on a desktop monitor and then consumed as a small rectangle on a phone. Text that is comfortable at 1280×720 frequently becomes unreadable in a mobile feed, and a three-element composition collapses into noise.
That gap is the single most common thumbnail mistake, and it is why previewing at true size is worth the extra minute. Two to four words of overlay text is the practical ceiling for something that has to survive being shrunk.

Why is the max-resolution thumbnail sometimes missing?+
